80-year-old woman passes away after getting stuck between subway screen doors

On September 25 at 9:51 AM KST, a horrific accident occurred at Isu Stationin Seoul. While an 80-year-old woman was attempting to board the subway line number 4, she became trapped in between the screen and subway doors and died when the train began leaving the station.

In many Seoul subway stations, there are stationary, transparent, screen doors that open only when the subway is in dock. These screen doors, which are shown in the top picture above, have proven useful in the past for preventing people from jumping in front of the subways as they arrive and committing suicide. However, in this case, because the Isu Station screen doors malfunctioned, it led to an unfortunate death of an unsuspecting elderly woman.

Authorities have suggested that because the woman was trying to enter the subway in the midst of a crowd that was going in and out of the vehicle, the train conductor could have not noticed her getting stuck and began leaving the station despite her predicament and was dragged 30 meters (98 feet). Authorities have further stated that they are still conducting an investigation to find out the accurate details behind this incident.

The subway line 4 was able to operate again at 10:30 AM, when the body was removed and investigators finished investigating over the scene. Netizens remain horrified by the news.
