BLACKPINK Releases Japanese Version and Music Video Of 'Ddu-Du Ddu-Du'

History-making K-pop girl group BLACKPINK dropped the music video for the alternate Japanese version of their hit single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” today (Aug. 17). The visual serves as a shortened version of the original Korean one.

The girl group released the Japanese rendition of the track on Monday (July 23), just over a month since the June release of the single.

Originally dropped with Korean and English lyrics on June 15 as the lead single from their Square Up album -- which made history as the highest-ranked album from a female K-pop act when it went to No. 40 on the Billboard 200 chart -- the new version of “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” mixes Japanese and English.

Upon its release last month, the Korean version of “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” also made history by hitting No. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 , the highest-ranking for a K-pop girl group and the first first time one has appeared on the chart since 2009.

Keeping the swaggering vibe of the original trap-dance track, the new English raps include Lisa making several references to pop culture, including SpongeBob SquarePants (“Bitch, I'm a star, but no Patrick”) and Ice-T (“Like Ice-T, I'm OG”). Jennie in turn raps about the group appearing on the cover of GQ Japan; they were the first-ever female group to have a solo cover shoot (“All my GQ's spread like hummus”).

The Japanese version arrived on Stateside digital music platforms on July 23, but the official Japanese release date is currently registered as Aug. 22. It came out just a few days after the music video for the original Korean “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” version hit more than 200 million views on YouTube -- the fastest-ever a K-pop group has achieved the feat.
