[ASKKPOP] [Drama Review] 'Golden Cross' - Episode 2

GOLDEN CROSS EPISODE 2

When we last left off,Ha Yoonwas in the clutches of theGolden Cross, trapped like a fly in the web and staying out of fear for her brother's life.Ha Yoonagrees to stay in her contract and is allowed to leave with her brother,Do Yoon.

The bank acquisition is accelerated and our hero's father,JooWan, makes the changes downgrading the bank's status as requested byKwon Se Il, President of Hanmin Bank. He is given 300 million won, enough for his wife to buy the restaurant.

Joo Wanlater formulates a plan to stop the bank acquisition and save the employees of Hanmin Bank. He is fired by the bank for his troubles. He sends some of the information to a private eye (who has also been hired byDong Ha'swife). The PI finds outHa YoonisDong Ha'smistress.

The PI approachesHa Yoonto enlist her aid -- her father needs help to get his job back.  Later, whileDong Hais in the shower,Ha Yoontakes pictures of his account book. When he catches her, he flies into a rage and beats her brains out with a golf club.

A member of the Golden Cross,Attorney Park,is called and they know who to blame.

Joo Wangets a text fromHa Yoon'sphone. He arrives at the scene of the crime, cradles his daughter's bloody body in his arms and is arrested. He is shuttled into a room withAttorney Park, who informs him his wife and his son will die if he does not cooperate and confess. SoJoo Wanconfesses - even to his son - that he murderedHa Yoon.

Ha Yoonshould have realized she was in over her head. Perhaps the little autonomy they allowed her gave her hope? The last thing I would want to do is tempt the wrath of an organization that threatens my family.

I do not envyJoo Wanhere. He is a man driven by circumstances and his family to do the wrong thing, then an attack of conscience forces him to do the right thing.  The wrong thing is rewarded, but the right thing lands him in jail minus a daughter.

Do Yoonwants to make money so his family can live well. His disdain for his father's conscience makes an interesting counterpoint toJoo Wan.Joo Wanjust wants things to be peaceable and to be happy; he thinks the way to do that is follow his heart.Do Yoonthinks the way to happiness is more cash. He has no clue about a shadowy conspiracy yet, so I wonder how he finds out? I'm assuming he will study his father's case once this goes to trial. Will there be enough holes in his father's story forDo Yoonto look through one of those holes and find the truth?

Dong Hais developed more in this episode and is possibly the most compelling character in the drama despite his faults. He is not entirely comfortable in his position with the Golden Cross. He is constantly concerned with the line between legal and illegal, and is pushed over that line constantly. The illegal sale of the bank must happen; the murder is covered up because they are the most powerful organization in South Korea; his wife is cheating on him, but he can't do anything about it because his father-in-law says so. He cheats, too, but that doesn't seem to bother him at all. It will be interesting to see ifDong Habecomes an ally in the fight to bring down the Golden Cross.

Now the pacing has picked up, and everything's starting to make sense. But the drama's just starting, so we're still left with many questions.  How does a bank changing hands affect the entire economy of South Korea?  And how do the members of the Golden Cross benefit from this? I'm guessing it means more money for the conspirators, but how exactly? Who is the Golden Cross, and what do they want?

Looking forward to the next episode!  What do you guys think?
