[Drama Review] 'Scholar Who Walks the Night' - Episode 16

In the last episode, we left off withYang Sun(YS) turning herself into the palace because she believes that she is the descendant of theGwi. Buuut, hunterBaek In Homagically regains his memory, and he recalls that even though Gwi drank the blood of YS's mother, he was perfectly unharmed. So the question remains...who exactly is Gwi's offspring? Some are conjecturing that it may beSoo Hyang(SH), the beautiful courtesan who have been serving underSung Yeol(SY) for practically all her life. But nothing is yet for certain. I guess we will have to wait for the rest of 'Scholar Who Walks the Night' to unfurl.

Gwi orders a royal decree to arrest everyone in a black cloak. However, one brave soul is risking his life going around in black, saving the girls who are to be sacrificed to the palace. It isn't declared outright, but the look exchanged betweenKing Lee Yoon(KY) and hisChief Left Minister No Chang Sunis clear enough indication that they are behind this whole rescue mission.

I get the feeling that somebody's watching me~

KY was indeed the one plotting to save the girls being sacrificed to the palace, having gathered a troop of 'Black Cloaks' to fulfill the mission. SY, who was headed to the palace to pluck YS out, crosses paths with KY, and the two question each other's resolve in the war against Gwi. SY tells the king that he can't forget either his promise toCrown Prince Junghyun(CPJ) or let any harm come to his lover, aka YS. KY, in turn, tells SY that he is willing to sacrifice his own life to defeat Gwi. So now we are sure we have two components of CPJ's equation: the guardian vampire and the will of the monarch. All we need to complete this equation now is the true descendant of the maternal line.

Hey there, check out my perfectly coiffed hair.

Hunter Baek In Ho jumps headlong into this whole dangerous mission without anyone asking him, as he has his own vendetta to fulfill against theChief Prime Minister. Unfortunately, SY was one step too late to save YS, as she was pulled out earlier by the Prime Minister. In a confusing whirlwind of events, the Prime Minister somehow ends up in the hands of Baek In Ho, who hands him over to SY, who nearly sinks his teeth into the minister's neck.

SH, still believing that YS is the key to kill Gwi, is on her way to sacrifice her. However, they are halted by Chief Left Minister, who offers YS a chance to escape her wretched fate. YS, being the selfless dunderhead she is, doesn't snatch up the fruit and refuses her chance at life. Even when the queen herself beseeches the Chief Left Minister to let YS go just to put a stop to all the unnecessary sacrifices, YS bolts for Gwi's quarters before anyone can stop her.

Great idea guys, let's go around together in our matching black cloaks inBROAD DAYLIGHT,shall we? There's no way anyone will notice us!

Outside of Gwi's underground palace,No Hak Youngbites Chief Left Minster, aka Chief Left Minister. Later, the human side of him emerges, and realizing what he has become, No Hak Young begs KY to kill him and shoves the knife that KY was holding into his heart.

Meanwhile, Gwi is gleefully about to enjoy the nice meal that SH brought him when he suddenly stops after noticing the bite mark scar on her shoulder. Putting two and two together, Gwi realizes that YS may have vampire blood in her that may be fatal to him. As Gwi is slowly choking YS to death, SY of course, shows up in the nick of time.

Better not touch my beard. Took me five months to grow it to this length.

The next episode we will get to see another battle between Gwi and SY play out. I just hope SY will hold out better than he did in his last fight with Gwi where he was thrown around like a rag doll.
