[Drama Review] 'Scholar Who Walks the Night' - Episode 19

We are near the end, folks! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! There are just two more episodes to go for 'Scholar Who Walks the Night,' and I can already tasteGwi's doom.

Gwi, fully aware ofLee Yoon(LY),Sung Yeol(SY), and theBlack Robes' scheme to sabotage his plans, puts a hefty award up on the whereabouts of the Black Robes and SY. However, Gwi may already be losing this battle as most of the citizens are taking the side of the Black Robes and SY. They are spreading the tale of SY as the 'Night Scholar' far and wide, buying their own black robes in the hopes of fighting for LY and SY's cause, and some are even discussing ways to put LY back on the throne. It's good that the people have finally come to their senses and realized Gwi is a just an evil vampire thirsty for power.

You know I got your woman, right?

B*tch, please. She don't love yo smoky eyeliner, lipstick-wearing, a$$.

LY, SY and co. continue to plot to bring Gwi down once and for all. Since Gwi is ever the cunning character, he won't use just any old trick in the book. Yang Sun proposes exploding Gwi's underground palace; however, that idea is quickly shot down as the risk is too great and requires SY to sacrifice himself in the process. LY reminds SY that he must live for YS and for their friendship. You best listen to your homeboy, SY! If you die, YS and her bumbling self will be hopelessly helpless.

Gwi plans to smother the Black Robes' spirit by killing LY. In order to lure LY out, Gwi decides to useHye Ryeong(HR) as bait. He announces the execution of his 'queen,' making certain that LY gains knowledge of her impending doom and knowing full well that LY wouldn't just let HR die at his hands.

Hey there lil mama...oh wait, you're probably sick of this joke. But I got nothing else...

As suspected, LY shows up on the day of HR's execution and implores Gwi to kill him instead. Of course, Gwi is just like, 'nope, I'm going to turn you into a vampire and kill your precious queen, too.' But Gwi's plans are foiled when he is stabbed in the back by HR, wounding him. At this point, I'm thinking... yeah a hair pin is really going to be fatal for a 200-year-old vampire.. HR's hair pin crippled Gwi long enough to save LY… but HR is killed in the process by Gwi who accidentally swiped at her with his claw. When that happened, this is pretty much me:

SY arrives at the scene to steal LY away, and Gwi goes into a fit of rage, especially after realizing that HR had been killed by his own hands. I got the feels in the following scenes, when Gwi carries HR to his underground cave and confesses to her dead body, "I wanted you to "hate me for hundreds and thousands of more years." So we learn that Gwi never actually planned to execute HR; she was just a tool in Gwi's bigger scheme. Drowning in sorrow from HR's death, Gwi brutally murders all the council members save for HR's father, the dastardlyPrime Minister Choi Chul Joong. Unsurprisingly, Choi Chul Joong shows no sign of remorse that her daughter is dead, even telling Gwi that he only lives to serve him. It's becoming more and more clear who the real power-hungry fiend is here.

SY and YS share their last goodbyes before SY goes to fight Gwi for the last time. YS, knowing that she will never see the scholar again, sees him off but doesn't reveal that she knows SY's plan to sacrifice himself. She knows that when the Black Robes place explosive in Gwi's underground palace, SY will still be in there, killing both him and Gwi.
