Lydia Ko to Donate Prize Money to Nepal Victims

The world's No. 1 woman golfer Lydia Ko will donate all the prize money she wins in the Volunteers of America North Texas Shootout to earthquake victims in Nepal.

Ko made the announcement one day before the event at the Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas.

"Obviously, it was very unfortunate when I got to hear that there was an earthquake in Nepal", she told reporters. "We had a big one in New Zealand, too, a couple years ago, and it affected a lot of people".

"Natural disasters you can't do much about", she added. "Sometimes it's hard to be prepared for it, so I thought, those people there, nice people and very innocent, so I wanted to give this tournament's earnings and donate it to them".

Ko picked up her second title of the season last week in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in Daly City, San Francisco, and she is at the top of the money list with US$908,810.

If she adds US$2,157 to her pot this week, her career prize money will exceed US$3 million just two years since she turned professional. The winner of the Volunteers of America North Texas Shootout will earn US$195,000.

Ko, who enrolled at Korea University this year, said, "I just started my university, and the essay assignments are very hard. But when junior golfers who are just a few years younger tell me that I'm their role model, I get motivated to do well in golf and my studies".
