Politician Expresses Desire For BTS To Perform In North Korea

A Korean politician has recently revealed his wishes for BTS to perform in North Korea.

On November 7, Democratic Party member Ahn Min Seok appeared on KBS 1’s “Jung Joon Hee’s Ultimate Current Affairs” (literal translation) as a guest.

During the interview portion of the radio show, the politician discussed North Korea-South Korea relations.

As the chairman of the Special Committee for Inter-Korean Cultural and Sports Cooperation, which was newly established as a permanent committee by the Democratic Party in September, Ahn Min Seok also expressed his desire for BTS to perform in Pyongyang. He stated, “Above all, our special committee is trying to push ahead for BTS to perform at Pyongyang around next year.”

In response, Jung Joon Hee asked, “Is [the possibility of BTS performing at Pyongyang] high?” Ahn Min Seok replied, “We must build all the roads. As the exchange of culture, sports, and arts is only possible by the cooperation between the two Koreas — without needing to be too mindful of other powerful nations — I think that in the larger scheme of things, it is a national task for the two Koreas to gather their strengths and work hard until the sanctions are lifted.”

Ahn Min Seok then concluded, “Please support [this goal of] BTS performing at Pyongyang.”

Previously, South Korean artists such as Cho Yong Pil, Lee Sun Hee, Yoon Do Hyun, Baek Ji Young, Jung In, Ali, Red Velvet, and Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun performed in Pyongyang from March 31 to April 3.

Although Ahn Min Seok’s comments have attracted considerable attention, as this is the first time the politician has expressed his desire for such an event to happen, no details of the Pyongyang event or BTS’s attendance have been confirmed.

BTS recently performed at the “Resonance of Korean Musicians” concert in Paris, France on October 14 after receiving an official invitation from the Blue House. After the concert, President Moon shook hands with the performers, including BTS, and exchanged a hug with Jungkook and V. BTS had previously been congratulated by the president on their Billboard success, and the group received commemorative watches with his name engraved on them from the First Lady during their trip to the United Nations.
