Seoul to Strengthen Ban on Old, Polluting Cars

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to step up its ban on old, polluting cars in the capital as it suffers from worsening air quality.

Currently, 13 routes into the city are monitored using surveillance cameras to stop these older cars. The city government will increase the number to 32 this year and 61 by 2019. Drivers violating the ban are first given a warning, with repeat offenders fined W200,000 (US$1=W1,169).

The ban now applies only to cars registered in Seoul, but in September it will be expanded to cars from the surrounding Gyeonggi Province.
