While this may not be news to some of our readers, the latest report from Akamai, a huge content-distribution service, lists South Korea as having both the highest average connection bandwidth to Internet users (17.5 Mbps) as well as the highest average peak bandwidth delivered to users (47.9 Mbps).

I'll use an example fromDigital Trendsfor a better understanding of these figures. Whereas in Korea, it would take about 30 minutes to download a high-definition movie, it could take over 30 hours in the countries with the lowest Internet speeds. Even the U.S., which is ranked 13th by Akamai, would need about an hour and a half to download the same movie.

Furthermore, South Korea leads by a large margin. The country's average broadband connection is 92 percent faster than the number-two country, Japan.

Here's the full top 10 list of countries with the highest average broadband connection speeds:

South Korea

Japan

Hong Kong

The Netherlands

Latvia

Switzerland

Ireland

Czech Republic

Romania

Belgium

As you can see by the chart below, South Korea's held the winning title for several years now.

For those who may be skeptical, Akamai is a good judge. According to its website, 15 to 30 percent of all web traffic goes through Akamai's service and the company delivers over 2 trillion daily Internet interactions.
