The dilemma of pre-produced dramas that even "Hwarang" couldn't avoid

It's not easy for a pre-produced drama to succeed. Statistically, they haven't done so well. They've had low percentages which doesn't cope with the viewers' immediate reactions.

There have been various pre-produced dramas this year. Half of them succeeded, while the other half didn't.

The greatest advantage of a pre-produced drama is that there are no 'last minute scripts' and the actors can afford some time to actually dig deeper into their roles.

Demands for pre-produced dramas increased for improvement in the drama making environment and it seemed like it was working for a while.

However, most pre-produced dramas were based on Chinese budgets and targeted for Chinese promotion so with the 'ban of Hallyu contents' due to the 'SAAD placement' has led to drama fais.

The dramas also don't match culturally with Korea and pre-produced dramas aren't able to react to viewers' opinions right away. There is no quality and no success.

The most successful pre-produced drama has been without a doubt, KBS 2TV "Descendants of the Sun". It set a record of 33%. WriterKim Eun-sookand directorLee Eung-bokworked on this one and the simultaneous broadcast in Korea and China led to astounding publication sales and accumulated views.

However, that was it.Kim Woo-binandSuzy's"Uncontrollably Fond"failed to make it big and neither didLee Joon-kiandIU's"Scarlet Heart: Ryeo". tvN "Cinderella and the Four Knights" and"Entourage"didn't see much light either as the latter rated somewhere in the 0%-1%.

Despite the 'spaciousness' of pre-production, the 'boldness' of it made people turn away and acting flaws didn't help with that. There is persistent problem with the script and directing that couldn't take advantage of the actors, eventually leading to a terrible result.

The preference cast in China due to Chinese capital is also a problem. Because the casting is focused on getting the Chinese what they like, some are willing to look over the terrible performance of the actors. The investors will get what they want.

Spaciousness in time replaced quality and the performance of the cast is below average. It's hard to say pre-production is better compared to the other. Drama makers should understand that recycling the story and the actors who have been criticized for bad acting will just lead to a plunge in numbers.

Another evaluation about pre-production, is that it's had so much more time without last minute scripts and all-nighters, so creating such results is just unacceptable.

Why couldn't everything be like "Descendants of the Sun"? Pre-produced dramas need to come up with the correctly intended dramas instead of just following a trend. The extra time need to be used wisely.

"Hwarang"is indeed not showing much progress and this needs to be reflected on. The upcoming SBS drama "Saimdang, the Herstory" starringLee Young-aeandSong Seung-heonshouldn't follow this path and not meet the same fate as " Scarlet Heart: Ryeo".
