Tom Cruise continues reign at Korean box office

Tom Cruise's sci-fi action adventure film "Edge of Tomorrow" was the winner of the weekend local box office, according to the Korean Film Council. The film appealed to local filmgoers as they observed Memorial Day on Friday.

By attracting more than 1.2 million viewers on 801 screens nationwide, Cruise once again proved his status as Korea's most beloved Hollywood star. The film has made a total of 16 billion won ($15.75 million) so far.

In second place was local action film"A Hard Day", starring actorLee Seon-gyoonandJo Jin-woong. It sold 495,228 tickets over the weekend, making 12 billion won. DirectorKim Seong-hoon's plot follows a detective, played by Lee, who gets threatened by a mysterious witness to his inadvertent hit and run. The film was screened at Directors' Fortnight in the 67th Cannes International Film Festival held last month. The Marvel superhero action film "X-Men: Days of Future Past" finished at No. 3 with 436,317 admissions, 13.6 percent of all viewers over the weekend.

Slightly behind was Walt Disney's latest fairy tale "Maleficent" with 342,172 viewers on 554 screens nationwide. It has earned 8.4 billion won.

Movie starJang Dong-gun's comeback wasn't widely welcomed by audiences. His new thriller"No Tears for the Dead", in which he plays a killer named Gon, only attracted 236,852 viewers.

DirectorJang Jin's action movie "Man on High Heels" ranked sixth, gaining 129,027 viewers during the weekend. Though the cast and director had aggressive media promotions before its release, the R-rated story didn't seem to pull in general moviegoers. The film sold 227,568 tickets in eight days.

Japanese animated feature "Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie", based on Gosho Aoyama's original manga series, finished seventh, a step down from last week. It added 74,368 more viewers.

No. 8 was Mike Flanagan's horror film "Oculus" with 41,249 viewers. While Spike Jonze's Oscar-winning film "Her" plummeted to No. 9, the animated "Blackie & Kanuto" won 14,406 admissions nationwide.
