"Entourage" Episode 6

"Entourage" Episode 6

Yeong-bin, his entourage and the entire production of his film have to deal with the aftermath of the star's confession to So-hee as he goes back into one of his moodswings defined by lack of professionalism. There is more tension between him and Ho-jin as the latter tries to handle the mess. Meanwhile Joon lands a role, but feels overpowered by a child actor, who also happens to be dating a furious Eun-gap's daughter.

I am still thoroughly confused by"Entourage"in terms of what it wants me to feel for its different characters. At times I feel like I see progress in Yeong-bin (Seo Kang-joon) and like I am asked to feel invested in him. Then the series turns him into an angsty, unprofessional teenager again and keeps him stagnant. I feel as if I have to relate to Ho-jin (Park Jeong-min-I), but his own journey is also slow to develop.

I have this issue with other characters as well and while it is handled more consistently with some, this is of little comfort due to their function. We get to properly see Joon (Lee Gwang-soo) as an actor this time and his struggle between exposure and skill is an interesting topic, but the series opts for comedy and the perpetuation of him as a comedic relief. It focuses on his silliness rather than taking this chance to humanize him a little in a way not solely reliant on belittling him.

Turtle (Lee Dong-hwi) is an unemployed young man who mooches off his rich friend and while some of the aspects and moral implications of such a lifestyle have been hinted, they have been quickly brushed off in favor of more "comedy". Slice of life is all about normalcy, not lack of meaning and I often feel as if"Entourage"has the basis of this concept all wrong. There is not much to enrich viewers through the observation of these lives and a lifestyle which is not relatable.

Perhaps the series does have some sort of development planned for the young folks, but it cannot come soon enough at this point. Eun-gap (Jo Jin-woong) is the most easy to approach character so far and his little overprotective father crisis is fun to watch. The conflict between his absolute control as an agent and how it has made him neglecting of and overbearing with his family is an interesting one.

By the end of the episode he has learned a few things about priorities and his subplot provides industry related commentary through his own experience while also being used to develop his character. This means that the creators are capable of combining their elements well. I just hope we get more of it soon, because the series is struggling. Perhaps Yeong-bin's new romance will push everyone forward.
