"God's Gift - 14 Days" Episode 12

"God's Gift - 14 Days" Episode 12

"God's Gift - 14 Days"has reunited Soo-hyeon and Dong-chan and sped up the story's pacing to breakneck speed. They begin to make some headway as they outsmart fate, tap into all of the key players, and take small steps towards unmasking and catching Saet-byeol's kidnapper (and potential two-time murderer.)

The planning involved in this show is truly made evident in this episode. The interconnections between characters, their pasts, and their agendas are complex, but they are well-woven together. It is now, in the later stages of the drama, that the plot intricacies can truly be appreciated. Just when I begin to wonder if a certain plot point has been dropped (as tends to happen in dramas), it is revived in a clever way. For example, I wondered if the Tae-oh storyline had been gone too long and it was only out of sight until Dong-chan and Soo-hyeon remembered Tae-oh's connection to Saet-byeol. It mirrored the pair's thinking - very clever.

It's also good to see the Dong-chang/Soo-hyeon team together again. They were separated by Ji-hoon who locked Soo-hyeon in a mental institution, but are now together, searching in earnest for the missing Saet-byeol. The situation is different from the first time she was kidnapped and the differences between the two timelines are the focus of their search. Because they know each other better now, their teamwork is finessed and that makes for very exciting television. Dong-chan and his private investigation team spent time with little Saet-byeol and are personally invested in her welfare. It also helps that Soo-hyeon has learned to calm her panic and use her investigative reporter skills to find her missing child.

The tensions between Soo-hyeon and Ji-hoon are mounting at incredible speeds, and also between him and the viewers. He holds a key piece of the puzzle and chooses to deal with it himself. Should he decide to tell Soo-hyeon, the odds could tip in Saet-byeol's favor. His love for his family juxtaposed with his dubious actions make him an especially strong character.

Little Saet-byeol marched courageously through the episode, trying to do as her mother told her - avoid the tattooed man. We follow her path to the kidnapping one step behind, seeing all the potential to save her at each step of the way. It is the little, selfish decisions people make that compounded and led to her kidnapping.

There is also the fact that this story moves vertically, from Soo-hyeon's family unit, through Ji-hoon's legal involvement, up to the South Korean president's political agenda to stop violent crime. That vertical movement is finally beginning to manifest as the president takes an active hand in Saet-byeol's kidnapping. This writer really leaves no walk of life left unexplored. Everyone holds some responsibility for Saet-byeol's disappearance. Secrets and selfishness combined into one long string of events - people not making the effort required to keep a little girl safe.

One of my favorite moments of the episode was the moment that the kidnapping is made known on the television show. The first time around, in episode 1, it was Soo-hyeon who was present on set. It was she who felt the dread of losing her child. This time Ji-hoon feels the weight of that horror and it is compounded with all of Soo-hyeon's warnings. It was a beautiful, tragic turn around for the father.

This episode was fantastic. As we head into the penultimate week, this is when the story planning will really begin to show it's mettle. It could fall apart in the last stages, or it could hold true to the quality it has already given us.
