"God's Gift - 14 Days" Episode 5

Just when we think that our heros have trumped fate, fate reminds them that it still has the upper hand. It wasn't trumped; it just got delayed a little.

While it was delayed, Dong-chan and Soo-hyeon developed more as a team and fostered some real camaraderie between them . The effect that Soo-hyeon's driving love for Saet-byul has on Dong-chan is amazing. It transforms him from a gruff, disenchanted ex-cop into a playfully arrogant, sweet, and supportive comrade.Jo Seung-woois masterful at delivering a nuanced character who is colorful and then further molded and changed by pressure and experience. Despite all of the development he's undergone, he still feels like an untapped well. There is so much more to him, which is revealed by the surprising ending of the episode. He is not even sure what he's capable of. That makes him a scary unknown in this game of fate versus choice where fate wields a heavy upper hand.

What is curious is that the show has only delved into one reason for the time jump thus far: save Saet-byul. With the developments in Dong-chan's story, those reasons expand and morph into questions. What does his brother Dong-ho have to do with this? His mother and nephew Yeong-gyoo? What about the president's strict policy against violent criminals and crimes? Now that fate has shown that Soo-hyeon's and Dong-chan's understanding of the situation is extremely limited and that they need to expand their knowledge base, and fast, if they want to get ahead.

Then we have Ji-hoon, Soo-hyeon's human rights lawyer who has much more to do and say in this version of reality. He gets involved in Soo-hyeon's death chase of who she believes to be Saet-byul's killer as that killer's defender. Ji-hoon lives by a very strict code that states that proceedings for all individuals, no matter their guilt, must be fair. Combine this outlook with Soo-hyeon's desperate attempt to save Saet-byul that includes ignoring the killer's human rights, and we have a relationship that works as well as mixing oil and water. Ji-hoon genuinely loves his wife, but his code of ethics guides him to the point that he even analyzes the story of Hansel and Gretel for Saet-byul in terms of the witch's rights. His outlook isn't wrong per se, but it conflicts directly with Soo-hyeon's all-in mission to save her daughter. This dichotomy between husband and wife and their views was a driving force in this episode and will hopefully continue to be such a force throughout the drama.

The one character that is hard to grasp in terms of writing is Soo-hyeon. She is so desperate and makes so many mistakes that it is illogical that she is able to get away with all of the antics she pulls. In terms of character development, it's pure gold, because we can see where she's coming from, where she's going, and how the events change her. In terms of logic, however, there is very little. I'm waiting for her to suffer legal repercussions for her actions. There is only so much Woo-jin can cover for her.

Noh Min-wooappeared for a hot minute as Saet-byul's beloved idol, Snake, and I'm assuming this is preparation for a larger involvement in the story. Saet-byul's small world that includes Snake, her friendship with Yeong-gyu and her parents hasn't really been explored, and with the scary near-repetition of events leading up to her death, perhaps looking into Snake and Yeong-gyu could give Soo-hyeon a clue of where to go next.

"God's Gift - 14 Days" Episode 5

"God's Gift - 14 Days"is chock full of juicy material and is just plain old entertaining. The acting is a real treat and the terrifying power of fate and the dogged determination of Soo-hyeon keep the drama moving forward. I'm expecting to stand on pins and needles for the remainder of the show, which is exactly how I like my mysteries.
