"God's Gift - 14 Days" Episode 7

Truth is not always what meets the eye. Episode 7 of"God's Gift - 14 Days"delivers this message to no small effect. As Soo-hyeon furthers endeavors to save her child alongside Dong-chan, the truths that are revealed are certainly not what anyone would expect.

The web that connects all the characters grows more intricate and it makes a great case for fate. With all the interconnections between the characters, how are they to extricate themselves from fate's tangled plans? That, and some of these characters never learn, which throws everything into fate's favor. Allowing Soo-hyeon and Dong-chan near the police station creates havoc. I constantly wonder why Woo-jin let's that happen. Soo-hyeon is a wild card. She's completely unpredictable. While it makes her character fun to watch, it is also frustrating because her impulsivity greatly lessens the effectiveness of her ability to help Saet-byeol. She rarely thinks anything through.

In that way she is tempered by Dong-chan who at first seemed to be the freer spirit, but is, in fact, a very meticulous person. He is worthy of his fame as an investigator. He, too, has an issue with impulsivity, especially around the police station. Outside of it he does great work. Helping Soo-hyeon investigate brings him closer to his brother's case. He's gradually grown closer to it through his nephew, Yeong-gyu, and has finally made the step towards active interest in his brother. It's a small one, but this man's journey in coming to terms with the situation is one of the strongest points of the show. Dong-chan is slowing coming back to life. At the beginning, he seemed adrift and not much attached to living. Now, he has purpose and is reconnecting with people, especially with those he loves, albeit reluctantly.

As for the plot of the show, there are an inordinate number of wicked people in it. I suppose it can be pinned on Ji-hoon's job as a human rights lawyer. He draws bad and vengeful people towards him, and by proxy, towards Soo-hyeon, Saet-byeol and Dong-chan. The president of South Korea is still in the process of determining the first person to die by the death penalty, which will soon start to press on Dong-chan's sense of urgency to save his brother. Some of these plot pieces are edited in a bit choppily, but they are no less effective.

The person who had the most light shed on him was Ji-hoon. He's been very tense over the past seven episodes and now we know why. He's an adulterer. He was unhappy in his marriage and therefore already unreceptive to Soo-hyeon. Now that she's seemingly acting crazy over Saet-byeol's impending death, he's been pushed to the edge. He was extremely angry this episode and very defensive of his work. Soo-hyeon and Dong-chang's investigation unearthed some truths about one of Ji-hoon's past child murder cases. He doesn't like his work or his integrity being questioned, especially not by the wife he's cheating on. Some of that is pride in his career. Most of that is that he is guiltily keeping a dark secret. Adultery is horrible. My biggest worry, however, is how Ji-hoon's desire to keep his adultery secret is going to hurt Saet-byeol.

The best part about the revelation of Ji-hoon's dark secret is that it casts so much suspicion on him. The woman he is cheating with, Min-ah (Kim Jin-hee,) is Soo-hyeon's colleague and the person who lost Saet-byeol in the alternate timeline where the child was murdered. Talk about complicated! I highly doubt Min-ah has anything to do with Saet-byeol's death, but the fact that it is put on the table to make things more complicated was a great move. Min-ah may or may not have another boyfriend, the man with the wrist tattoo that Soo-hyeon believes to be Saet-byeol's killer. I find this complication fascinating and a writing strength.

I take issue with how scenes in the dark are filmed. They are very hard to see the action. The choreography of the fighting is very well done and it often gets obscured by badly lit filming. It's strange because the quality of the rest of the filming is so high. The music is also very intense, occasionally too much so. It gives away things a bit too early.

At this point, I'm pretty worried about Saet-byeol. Her mother may love her a lot and she's definitely trying very hard to save her, but she's self-sabotaging herself with her impulsivity. She is lucky to have Dong-chan on her side. Then there is Ji-hoon whose adultery may make him useless in the race to save Saet-byeol.

Despite the flaws, this show is exciting and I'm eagerly going to watch episode 8!
