"Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 6

"Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" Episode 6

If this drama's going to insist on making everything into a murder mystery, it at least manages to to set the tone for the proceedings properly here by quickly introducing an element of silliness- a great deal of the invesigation revolves around a fortune teller. He's a pretty elaborately dressed one, too, and appears to have knowledge of events that should be impossible to know.

As usual for the most part this is played straight, and the laughs come from the investigation team's later discussion on such irrelevant topics like whether or not the fortune teller is for here. You're probably familiar enough with the pattern by now. Everyone else is having all these silly thoughts, while a typically exasperated Joon-hyeok has to tell them to focus on the facts they actually know and work on solving the crime.

There's moreChoi Jin-hyeokthis episode, which is something I'm thankful for. I just really like watching him pretend to be a younger version ofLee Soon-jae- always agitated at the fact that his subordinates aren't taking the situation seriously. Unfortunately outside of one sceneChoi Jin-hyeok's screen presence is mainly used as an emotional crutch. He has a reflective moment of stargazing, and other than that, he mainly just appears in brief imaginative shots to build up romantic tension with Eun-ji. Which admittedly would be a lot creepier if we had to watchLee Soon-jaedo that stuff.

I'm not sure about the romantic subplot as a whole though. There's not really much compelling reason for it except that Eun-ji is the only female member on the team. Of course, I could write that about the whole drama- there's not much point to any of it except to watch a gang of old men (and a younger man and woman) bumble through mysteries in comical ways that are not befitting their age.

Still, the emotional moments do have some tenderness. And while the finale does have some potential to go bad, for the most part this is averted when the final rumble goes down. The mystery is solved a bit earlier than usual, for what it's woth. The solution is another case of a character resorting to murder for reasons that aren't really particularly convincing. Regardless, when the purpose of the drama is taken in mind, and the silliness is appreciated as the main selling point, it's a good enough solvable enough mystery. Just don't make it too complicated. That's "Grandpas Over Flowers Investigation Team" in a nutshell really.
