"It's Okay, That's Love" Episode 8

This episode is mostly just a fun date, so there's not a whole lot of objectionable material. It really does do wonders for the Jae-yeol / Hae-soo romance to just have them away from other people for a change. Without any targets to provoke for the most part these two are able to behave like sensible human beings who are more focused on one another's needs and happiness than in petty oneupsmanship.

In fact, we get several unusual moments of self-awareness this episode. Hae-soo has finally caught on to the fact that, whatever Jae-yeol's true intentions, the way he's been treating her is basically just standard seduction technique. It would work on any woman equally well regardless of her actual personality. Of course, this does question the depth of the supposed mutual attraction they've been feeling for the past several episodes- but this isn't much of an issue to me, who's already been questioning that this whole time.

The main argument suggesting that Jae-yeol's feelings are genuine lies in the first leg of the trip. I'm not just referring to where they go, but also his more general attitude. Jae-yeol acts playful, but for the first time, not completely out of tune with Hae-soo's spoken desires. An accident results in Jae-yeol changing his behavior, however temporarily, indicating that he's capable of multiple emotional reactions to love. Objectively speaking, this is not that impressive. I've just been so exasperated with his transparent aggression that any kind of variation at all represents a dramatic improvement.

There's also some effective, albeit strange comparative resonance with Jae-yeol's mental state, which from a storyline perspective is a little confusing. So his subconcious is imaging stuff that's happened right now which he won't find out about until later? Or is it happening right now without his noticing because these events are somehow related to going on with Hae-soo?

Make no mistake, there's still plenty of problems with the "It's Okay, That's Love". For the most part the most frustrating issues are ameliorated by the absence of any large group gatherings. I don't think we ever see more than three characters in the same room at any given time, which makes it much more difficult for characters to agitate each other. Enough of the drama has creepy undertones that I'm still very leery of it. Be that as it may, this is at least a change in the right direction and I hope "It's Okay, That's Love" will continue in this vein.
