"Masked Prosecutor" Episode 10

"Masked Prosecutor" Episode 10

Episode 10 was all about backing the bad guys into the corner. This means it focused on the procedural aspect of the show. The procedural aspect of "Masked Prosecutor is, by far, the weakest part of the drama. Therefore, this episode was decidedly weak.

Dae-cheol and his helpers figure out how to back Sang-taek and his cronies (who include Hyun-woong) into a proverbial corner. The method by which he does so is neither riveting nor complex. In fact, it's underwhelming. There was so little focus on the development of any major characters or on the romance that this episode seemed less like an episode and more like filler information that would've been more effectively rendered if summarized in a paragraph and read aloud.

Hyeon-woong has become less and less layered as the episodes pass. What made him interesting was the fact that he was pulled in two directions by his obligations to his family and by his very active conscience. That conscience has dulled with the passage of time and the inability of the show to juggle multiple plot threads. He was a character who I had high hopes for. Dae-cheol, our hero, is motivated by revenge, but Hyeon-woong has a much more complex and cerebral issue. It has sadly been ignored.

Even Sang-taek, the man who had begun to see some character development because of his love for his daughter, has become no more than a cartoon villain. We need to see conflict of interest in the characters. Or, if not that, at least the impetus behind their behavior. Sang-taek is a villain, but he isn't pure evil. Neither is he motivated by the love of inflicting pain. Because of this he needs more substance to his character to be effective. The same can be said for almost all other characters.

With all of the anemic procedural development there was little? room for romantic development. That has been the highlight of the past few episodes, mostly due to the wonderful chemistry between the leads. A scene or two was devoted to the show's strongest suit, the levity of the romance between Dae-cheol and Min-hee. There was an attempt to raise Ri-na to second lead status by having her flirt with Dae-cheol, but it was too little too late.

What was good about this episode was how Sang-taek tried to reach out to Min-hee for sympathy and how she stood her ground and refused him. The scene was cleverly shot in dim lighting and the frames focused on face shots, which highlighted the shadow play on facial features. It was such a great scene that I wish the rest of the episode had been equal to it, especially to the strength with which Min-hee refused her horrid biological father's plea for empathy.

I have hope that the next episode will not be as dismal as this one.
