"Miss Korea" Episode 14

This episode of"Miss Korea"was all about hope, which foreshadows something very bad happening very soon. But, until the worst happens, we can revel in the beauty of the sweet interactions between characters and the triumphs of the just against the corrupt.

Team Ji-young fights the system along with the other presidents who find the handling and organizational choices of the"Miss Korea"competition unjust. The battle produces results and Ji-young heads into the preliminaries with a light heart, a bright smile, and tons of determination. She does well, which is wonderful for the heroine. Unfortunately, we also get very long scenes of contestants doing dance routines and singing. It's a flaw of the director/writer pair, letting scenes run too long. They tended to do this in Pasta as well as the earlier episodes of the show. It's overindulgent to have such long, exposed scenes. Even the adorable not-quite-lover's quarrel between Hwa-jeong and Seon-saeng wore out its welcome.

What"Miss Korea"does just right is the cuteness. Ji-young's family is wonderfully supportive and their presence gives the show a heartwarming feeling despite all of the deception and nastiness floating about. They are not only Ji-young's backbone, but the shows backbone as well. There is also the blossoming relationship between Ji-young and Hyung-joon, which gets stronger with mutual need, growing respect and a natural fondness that has always been present. The beauty of their relationship is in the little things: thanking each other, he washing her hair when she's exhausted, turning towards each other to share good news. While this is the calm before the"Miss Korea"storm, it's a beautiful calm.

Lee Yoon the character and his actor,Lee Ki-woo, are a waste, however. It's disappointing how little he has to do and how one-dimensional his ambitions and his jealousy is. There was hope for him last episode and there be hope yet, but each time he comes on screen to mope is a downer. Rather than inefficiently wasting time on extended lover's quibbles or simplified pageant dancing, there could've been extra scenes used to develop Yoon's character and pad his back story to make him more relatable.

There was a definite scent in the wind that tells me there will be hefty change afoot for the competition itself. I would like for that to apply to some of the character development, too. Only next week's episodes will tell.
