"She Gets Married Thrice" Episode 40 Final

"She Gets Married Thrice" Episode 40 Final

And so, it all comes down to a final negotiation. Eun-soo with Joon-goo's family, over the fate of the baby. Don't expect any emotional fireworks here- the same as all along throughout this drama, Eun-soo refuses to indicate any sign of weakness. She represses all her emotions, and it's only in one final flourish that she lets the pain out. And after that, it's all over. The misery of the past forty episodes has finally come to an end as Eun-soo finds her answer.

I liked the answer actually. It's a bit of a weaselly way of dealing with the mystery of the title. In the end Eun-soo is the woman who gets married thrice. But it's a moment that fits her character and everything that she's learned. These aren't necessarily good lessons, honestly. Considering what Eun-soo went through though, I can't really fault the conclusions she's come up with. An arrangement like what Hyeon-soo and Gwang-mo has really is preferable to the stiff business-like marriages Eun-soo endured, so perhaps some creativity in defining our love lives is a good idea.

As for the baby...I get that, too. I understand Eun-soo's reasoning. I think Eun-soo's wrong, but I don't think the drama necessarily believes that Eun-soo's choice is the correct one. Consider the scene with her mother. Eun-soo has this unrealistic ideal of the self-sacrificing mother, and even if she's being contradicted in dialogue, the context of the scene makes the hypocrisy of the moment very clear.

Really, this episode is rife with contradictions and hypocrisy to the point of absurdity. This is the last episode. But Joon-goo decided to continue with that unhealthy relationship? The positive change in Eun-soo's life is quite obviously the fact that she takes a job, and yet she engages in very little discussion of it. Lady Choi's final conversation with Seul-gi is very deliberately unsettling, the implication clearly being that there will be more trouble down the road.

Really though, is forty episodes enough for people to completely solve all their personality flaws, especially the ones that were never actually addressed? Let's be honest here. Even if Eun-soo had become a thrice married woman in the traditional sense, there would always be that lingering sense of unease given what happened to her first two marriages. Not everyone has it in them to get an unambiguously happy ending. All they can do is try, and that's not always enough. This has been the watchword of "She Gets Married Thrice" from beginning to end, and it would have been dishonest had the drama decided to abandon that ideal of imperfection at the last minute.
