"The Girl Who Sees Smells" Episode 7

"The Girl Who Sees Smells" Episode 7

The format is mostly the same as last episode. Moo-gak and Cho-rim act cute for a moment, then Jae-hee does sneaky criminal stuff, then Moo-gak and Cho-rim get around to solving the current case of the week and finally, we close out with a dramatic cliffhanger wherein essential information relative to the case is discovered. While consistency is nice, "The Girl Who Sees Smells" continues to be consistent in a somewhat annoying inconsistent way.

Jae-hee's criminal activities, mainly, to me still reek mostly of good luck. He goes to a lot of trouble to set up an alibi here that isn't really all that convincing, and would completely fall apart if even one of the people deliberately enlisted in the plan tried to have a conversation with someone else. People talk. People notice things. Even if we generously assume there's only a ten percent chance of something going wrong per step, Jae-hee makes about ten of these steps this episode, not counting all the times he must have cobbled together these schemes over the past several years of serial murders.

The crime logic does make sense from a certain point of view- it just doesn't hold up to lateral reasoning. The non-murder related case is another instance of a weak alibi inexplicably being treated as a strong one by the cops. Photos can be doctored- or simply taken on a different day than claimed. Asking around for eyewitnesses or examining CCTV footage would be much better evidence than reenacting the date.

...Oh right, this is a romantic comedy. So on that point I have to give credit. The goal of that particular sequence was to have Moo-gak and Cho-rim go on a date and do typical cute date things without actually having them go on a date. The situation might have been contrived but I'm not a completely humorless grump.Park Yoo-chunandSin Se-kyeonglook cute together. And they will continue to look cute together.

As for the overriding mystery, I'm much less confident on that point. It's bad enough that the universe is designed so that Jae-hee's plans always work even when they shouldn't- then he somehow manages to sneak up on Moo-gak in an area with no visible hiding places. Is this really going to be the entire plot here? Jae-hee skulking about like a ninja, impossible to catch because apparently everybody's blind? I really hope not.
