"Uncontrollably Fond" Episode 15

"Uncontrollably Fond" Episode 15

The major focus of the drama has been on the push and pull between Joon-young and Eul and that focus detracts greatly from the other supposedly large conflicts floating about. Those conflicts could potentially give rise to interesting explorations of the darker side of humanity so often highlighted in melodrama. Unfortunately,"Uncontrollably Fond"falls short of fulfilling those conflicts.

Before I jump into the plot, I'd like to say that I have been pleasantly surprised by Suzy who has been known for her wooden acting. Although she doesn't possess quite the depth I'm looking for in an actress, her improvement is staggering. That said, I'm underwhelmed by the usually stimulatingIm Joo-hwanin his dull role. It could be the fault of the role and the direction. His other work is much more engaging.Kim Woo-binandLim Joo-eunhave the most fiery roles and they are the most interesting as of now. Sadly,Lim Joo-eun's role is merely an explosive women. Lim is capable of much more so I hope the character is fleshed out.

Ji-tae's mother is supposedly a huge obstacle, but we've seen little of her, her power struggles with her son, and any sort of depth of character. The same holds true for his father, Assemblyman Choi. The man only sasses his son and then spends the episode pining away for Joon-young's mother. We see nothing of his wit, his power, or what makes him a formidable opponent to the powerless and the powerful.

A few doses of cute were administered between scenes to lighten the melodrama: Eul dreams of happier times with Joon-young; Jik has a romantic spat with his sort of girlfriend, Ha-ru; Joon-young's mom horses around with her ahjussi friend. I'm happy to say that most of these interventions not only lightened the mood, but were actually useful to the plot.

I'm still skeptical with how this drama is going to finish up in these next few weeks. It's less about the quality of the plot and more about beautiful shots, beautiful people, romantic tensions, and lots of kissing.
