"Voice" Episode 13

"Voice"has found its heart. We finally peer into the inner workings of Kwon-joo and Jin-hyeok as well as our bad guy, Tae-goo. A lot of back story and emotional underpinnings came to light and I have to say, "It's about time". After all of the excitement of the cases and running around, having some emotional weight added is much needed.

Tae-goo benefits fromKim Jae-wook's spot on portrayal of his insanity. There was a moment when Tae-goo realizes that Kwon-joo has been tracking his murders and deceptions and cackles with glee. It was unabashed delight in her interest - a terrifying, but beautifully acted moment. Before that moment we get to see that Tae-goo was always a cruel person. As a child he smashed his pet to death for biting him. As an adult, he kills on impulse. Even worse, his rich, influential father allows it to happen and covers his murderous son's tracks so that no one else knows of his deadly proclivities. His father, Chairman Mo, is powerful enough to hide murder, to instate the police commissioner, and manipulate businesses and city heads for decades. Getting to know Chairman Mo is interesting because on one hand, he is the god of the underworld, and on the other he is a man who loves a monster made of his flesh and blood. I hope to see more of this interesting character. His intrigue doesn't make up for the fact that every case in the show is linked to his network of crime and manipulation, but I'll take what I can get.

Also, Kwon-joo and Jin-hyeok are finally sitting down and being honest with each other. After a very difficult episode in which they both explore the last violent moments of their loved ones, these two are ready to connect on an emotional level. We see them react to the deaths in a way they should've long ago. Jin-hyeok uses that incentive to go see his son because while he wife was alive he neglected her for work. Kwon-joo reaches out to Jin-hyeok with the truth after keeping it to herself.

While they come together, some suspicion has been cast on Dae-sik by the camera work. When mentioning an informant in the police station, the situation suggests that Dae-sik was the only one who could've shared it, and the camera kept catching in suspicious moments. Perhaps this is why this character remained undeveloped, so that we wouldn't cotton on to his role as an informant. I hope he's not. I like him.

While Tae-goo made Jin-hyeok's wife out to be a cheater, it is Kwon-joo's keen hearing that clears her. It is also that hearing that lets her know that Chairman Mo's son, Tae-goo is the killer. What will she do with that information?
