"You're Surrounded" Episode 19

"You're Surrounded" Episode 19

The penultimate episode of "You're Surrounded" tied a lot of pieces together. It was a mixture of very moving, and slightly disapointing. Back stories were finally depicted in an amount of detail that should've been present ages ago. It would've given the significant happening of the episode much more impact. Much of the lack of development comes from the show's slow pace. Pace does not always dictate less storytelling, but it does require more efficient writing impart information.

What this episode suffered from was a lack of buildup. Its sad events would've been more emotional had "You're Surrounded" established the relationships between Chief Kang and Dae-goo, and Chief Kang and Pan-seok. Instead, the episode resorted to flashbacks to heighten the impact of Kang's death. What it should've done was build the rapport between Kang and her subordinates slowly over the course of the drama. There was a hint of how strong the relationships were, but nothing definitive like the flashbacks this episode.

The show also tried to bring back the humor that was so prevalent in its earlier episodes using Cha Tae-ho, Kang's second-in-command. He has often been used as comic relief. In the episodes of late, however, the efforts fall flat. That isn' to say he wasn't funny - rather, the efforts seemed out of place.

What was effective was how Assemblyman Yoo outmaneuvered the heroes yet again, giving them more incentive to bring him and his wicked daughter to justice. The good guys have Cha on their team and the backing of the entire police force - they supported their late chief. The rookie team has come together and become an asset to the precinct. Now that they have, they must put their efforts into apprehending the clever Yoo.

A twist in the episode involved Ae-yun's biological son, Ki-joon, who everyone believed to be Dae-goo's half-brother - DNA testing proves that he is not. His involvement in the happenings of the show has been minor, but should've have been greater so that the revelations concerning him and Dae-goo had more impact. Again, it was a lack of planning on the writer's part.

Despite these issues, the episode packed a lot of emotional punch, which is this show's signature. It assigns so much meaning to the small occurrences and the actors do such a wonderful job of timing the emotional beats. "You're Surrounded" may not have the sharpest writing out there, but it is full of heart.
