Three days of cool early-autumn weather finally put an end to a record heat wave in Korea over the weekend.

The mercury plunged about 10 degrees Celsius across the country, with the highest temperature at 24.5 degrees and the lowest tat 20.2 degrees in Seoul on Sunday.

Temperatures will be cooler than normal until Wednesday before rising again a little in early September, the Korea Meteorological Administration said. 

The cooling is due to typhoon Lionrock, the 10th of this year, which formed in waters east of Japan on Aug. 19 and moved south and then north again on Friday.

Meteorological information provider Kweather said the typhoon brought a cold continental anticyclone to Korea.

The entire peninsula sweltered in record heat this August, undisturbed by the usual typhoons of the season.

Early-autumn weather is expected to continue until Sept. 7, according to the KMA's mid-term forecast on Sunday. The lowest temperature over the next three days will be 19 degrees in Seoul, about 1.7 to 1.8 degrees cooler than normal, and the highs 23 to 26 degrees.
